The journey toward healing after abuse can often feel overwhelming. Many women find themselves stuck in a cycle of painful memories, intense emotions, and difficulty seeing their own worth. If you've been struggling to move forward, know that you're not alone—and that sustainable, lasting change is within your reach.
The Challenge of Finding Lasting Change
Healing isn't a linear process. The weight of the past can sometimes feel impossible to overcome, with emotions overwhelming us just when we think we're making progress. When we don't fully recognize our own value, self-care becomes an afterthought rather than a priority. These challenges are normal parts of the healing journey, but they don't have to be permanent roadblocks.
Small Sustainable Shifts, Big Impact
True healing doesn't happen overnight. It begins with tiny, sustainable shifts that gradually transform into powerful change. This is how I approached my own healing and this was what really allowed me to make lasting progress.
Rather than attempting complete life overhauls that often lead to burnout (which is my personal default), focus on making one small healthy choice today. Then once that feels natural and normal, make another small change. Each small step builds upon the last and also creates confidence and momentum for the next.
These micro-changes might look like taking five minutes for deep breathing, choosing a nourishing breakfast, or setting one boundary in a relationship. The key is consistency rather than intensity.
The Sustainable Power of Stacking Habits
When one positive change becomes automatic in your routine, you create space to add another. Like building blocks, these habits create a strong foundation for lasting healing. Your brain begins to recognize and cement these new patterns, while your body responds with renewed energy and resilience.
Think about one habit you can try for a few weeks. Perhaps it's a short morning walk or a brief evening journaling practice. Once established, introduce a second habit that complements the first, gradually building a network of positive behaviors.
Crowding Out Instead of Cutting Out
Another incredibly effective approach to sustainable healing is the concept of "crowding out." Rather than focusing on eliminating negative patterns—which often creates resistance and stress—add more positive elements to your life. As you incorporate more nourishing foods, gentle movement, meaningful connections, and compassionate self-talk, these positive additions naturally crowd out what no longer serves you.
This approach removes the pressure of "giving up" behaviors and instead shifts your focus to adding good things into your life. Over time, you'll find less space and desire for the habits that were holding you back.
